Matt Rolph - 'I see it!'

Matt Rolph

Troy, NY

I've just moved, and am very busy with graduate school. Email is the best way to reach me. And ask me for my mobile phone number.

Effective communication, and considerate, humane design are always my goals. Identifying the most important human needs and ambitions at the heart of whatever is to be created or published leads to great work. I have faith in my ideas, but, of course, there is a point in every work process where theory is pushed aside in favor of customer satisfaction.

Pre-RPI Design Portfolio

These are a few examples of my earlier design work.

Websites

www.akwaabaensemble.com www.akwaabaensemble.com

The Akwaaba Ensemble project includes the incorporation of Google Apps (like the calendar) and revenue-generating ads.

Medieval Society of Plymouth State University oz.plymouth.edu/~medsoc

This was a project with students of the Medieval Society of Plymouth State University. Jennifer Jones in particular developed content and contributed to the design. Like most of the low-cost projects, it uses an extant template which I built onto using Dreamweaver and Photoshop. I do write good CSS, but when cost in time or money are factors, I'll use stock code or a carefully selected free template as a starter.

Personal Trainer Site 1 www.dr-dumbell.com (first)

Personal trainer Kingsley Kabari liked the first design, but ultimately wanted a redesign with a logo, Flash elements, a custom blog, and other additional features. The new version is due out this summer.

Summer Anthology 2007 Middle/High School Voices 2007 Middle/High School Voices

I took the photograph of a moth used on the cover design for the anthology of teacher's writing (left). The other two covers use stock elements. On these projects, I was managing editor, creating the camera-ready book interior, covers, and so on.

Cartoons / Illustrations

illustration Paul grandfather

parents Paulbube

These are all from The Bube Bus, a children's book by Marshall Nanis. In the story, a boy's grandmother ('bube') has died, and, after some grief, he and his grandfather take a ride on a bus full of grandmothers. I doodle and draw, but most of my work for the past few years has been to do with visuals and technical illustrations for classes I'm teaching.

Other work

I'll add more examples of technical illustration, visual design, logo design, writing, technical writing, editing, and document design as I come across them in my archive.

When I've done my job well, it looks like no job at all -- clear, easy to use, intuitively right, almost immediately accepted and internalized by the audience. Accomplishing this effect requires context, however. I will post some examples here, but I believe you'll be happier if you give me a chance to show you what I can do with material you provide.
